This listing is for a vintage dollhouse (1:12) scale miniature pewter 2 candle mirror backed wall sconce. The sconce back is a highly embellished pewter rectangle with an oval mirror at its center. There is a small hole at the top of the rectangle for hanging it on the wall. In front of the mirrored pewter rectangle are two J shaped brackets with red tipped  ("flaming") white candles. The back of the piece lacks any kind of identifying marks.
This sconce has no original packaging, so it could have been made at any time in the 1970s  either at the Colonial Craftsmen Pewter Workshop at 1282 Lafayette St. in Cape May, NJ ( or after their acquisition by the Stieff Company when the workshop was moved to Baltimore, MD.
This 2 candle sconce is a faithful miniature reproduction of a Colonial era piece in 1:12 scale (1" = 1'). It shows great care and detail in the making and reflects well on its makers.
The sconce measures  1 3/4" H x 7/8" W x 7/16" D.
This 2 candle wall sconce was preowned but is in excellent condition given its age.
The Colonial Craftsmen Pewter Workshop was founded in about 1971 in Cape May, NJ by Kendall Swint Ewer of Chester, Pennsylvania. Mr. Ewer was retired from the real estate business and had become interested in making reproduction Revolutionary period buttons in pewter. His products were very popular and so he expanded his business to include making miniature pewter replicas of other Colonial period items: serving dishes, plates, carving sets, eating utensils, coffee sets, tea sets, goblets, trivets, candle holders, oil lamps, wall sconces, mirrors, picture frames, clocks, figurines, and more. Kendall Ewer's wife, Virginia Ewer, worked with him.
At the time, he was the only maker of miniature pewter in America, His items were marked K Ewer Pewterer. His pewter products were lead-free (made from a combination of 91 % tin, .5 % copper, 4.5 % antimony, and the rest was bismuth ). His products were cast in special molds, and hand finished. His pewter products were very hard and durable and were faithful reproductions of the original Colonial models from which they were copied.
In the mid 1970s his company was bought by Stieff and operations were moved to Baltimore, MD. Stieff also made miniature reproductions for Colonial Williamsburg in both pewter and sterling silver. The Colonial Craftsmen Division of Stieff was gone by1979.
