19th Century French Checkerboard
Horn Snuff Box
In
the 19th century black horn snuff boxes produced in Europe were made
from imported buffalo horn and decorated with inlays of thin lamina of
various materials - nacre, ivory, dyed horn, etc. This box is
made of horn
and the lid is decorated with nacre and/or other material in a
checkerboard pattern. The box is 3" by 1 1/4" and just under 1" high.
The box has some wear but is in
very good and working condition.
